What is Ausländerbehörde?

Quick definition

The foreigners' registration office — the local government authority that issues and manages residence permits for non-German nationals.

How it works

The Ausländerbehörde (foreigners' authority), sometimes called the Landesamt für Einwanderung in larger cities like Berlin, is the government office responsible for all residence permit matters. This is where you apply for your initial residence permit, extend it, or change its type. Appointments are often required and can have long wait times in major cities. You'll typically need your passport, Anmeldung confirmation, employment contract, health insurance proof, and biometric photos. Processing times vary by city — Berlin is known for longer waits, while smaller cities often process faster.

Why it matters

This is the authority that decides on your right to live and work in Germany. Building a good relationship with your local Ausländerbehörde and submitting complete applications is critical to avoiding delays.
