How it works
The Niederlassungserlaubnis (settlement permit) is Germany's permanent residence permit. It has no expiry date and allows unrestricted employment. For an employee to qualify, they typically need: at least 5 years on a temporary residence permit (or 21–33 months with an EU Blue Card), sufficient German language skills (B1), steady income, adequate pension contributions, and a clean record. EU Blue Card holders have the fastest path — they can apply after just 21 months if they have B1 German, or 27 months with A1 German. Under the updated Skilled Immigration Act, foreign-trained professionals can apply after 3 years instead of 4.
Why it matters
Permanent residence removes all restrictions on your employee's stay in Germany. It eliminates renewal appointments, employer-tied permits, and the risk of losing talent due to visa complications — giving your company long-term workforce stability.
