What is Steuer-ID (Tax Identification Number)?
Quick definition
An 11-digit tax identification number automatically assigned to every registered resident in Germany — needed for employment and banking.
How it works
The Steuer-ID (Steuerliche Identifikationsnummer) is an 11-digit number assigned by the Federal Central Tax Office (BZSt) after you complete your Anmeldung. It is automatically mailed to your registered address, usually within 2–4 weeks. Your employer needs this number to process your salary and tax withholdings correctly. If you start work before receiving it, your employer can apply for it or use a temporary arrangement, but you may be taxed at a higher rate (Steuerklasse 6) until it's sorted. You can also request it directly from the BZSt if the letter doesn't arrive.
Why it matters
Without your Steuer-ID, you'll pay the highest tax rate on your salary. Getting your Anmeldung done quickly ensures the Steuer-ID arrives before your first payday.
