What is Meldebescheinigung?
Quick definition
The official registration certificate you receive after completing your Anmeldung — proof that you are registered at a German address.
How it works
The Meldebescheinigung (registration certificate) is the document you receive from the Bürgeramt after completing your Anmeldung. It confirms your name, date of birth, nationality, and registered address. You'll need this document for virtually every administrative step in Germany: opening a bank account, applying for a residence permit, enrolling children in school, signing up for health insurance, and more. It's typically valid for 6 months for these purposes, after which you may need a fresh copy. You can request a new Meldebescheinigung from any Bürgeramt for a small fee (around €5–10).
Why it matters
This single document unlocks almost everything else you need to do in Germany. Bring multiple copies to your first few weeks of appointments.
