How it works
Familienzusammenführung (family reunification) enables your international hire's immediate family to relocate to Germany. The sponsor must hold a valid residence permit, EU Blue Card, or settlement permit. Spouses must be at least 18. Children must be unmarried and under 18. Applications are submitted through the German embassy in the family member's country of residence. Since March 2024, skilled workers who received their residence permit after that date can also bring parents and parents-in-law. Spouses and minor children of skilled workers are no longer required to prove sufficient living space. Processing times vary, and the official advice is to apply well in advance due to long appointment waiting lists at embassies.
Why it matters
Family reunification is often the deciding factor in whether a candidate accepts a role in Germany. Delays or surprises in the family visa process can derail an otherwise smooth relocation. Proactively planning for family visas alongside the primary hire's application saves weeks and improves candidate acceptance rates.
