How it works

Familienzusammenführung (family reunification) enables your international hire's immediate family to relocate to Germany. The sponsor must hold a valid residence permit, EU Blue Card, or settlement permit. Spouses must be at least 18. Children must be unmarried and under 18. Applications are submitted through the German embassy in the family member's country of residence. Since March 2024, skilled workers who received their residence permit after that date can also bring parents and parents-in-law. Spouses and minor children of skilled workers are no longer required to prove sufficient living space. Processing times vary, and the official advice is to apply well in advance due to long appointment waiting lists at embassies.

Why it matters

Family reunification is often the deciding factor in whether a candidate accepts a role in Germany. Delays or surprises in the family visa process can derail an otherwise smooth relocation. Proactively planning for family visas alongside the primary hire's application saves weeks and improves candidate acceptance rates.

Frequently asked questions

Does the employee's spouse need to speak German before arriving?
It depends on the employee's permit type. If the employee holds an EU Blue Card, the spouse is exempt from language requirements. For other permit types, basic German (A1) is typically required before entry.
Can the employee's spouse work immediately upon arrival?
Spouses of EU Blue Card holders and skilled workers receive unrestricted work authorization from day one. No separate work permit is needed.
Can our employee bring their parents to Germany?
Since March 2024, skilled workers who received their residence permit after that date can bring parents and parents-in-law. This is a new provision under the reformed Skilled Immigration Act.
Does the employee need to prove sufficient living space for their family?
For spouses and children of skilled workers, the living space requirement has been removed since March 2024. For other permit holders, adequate housing must still be demonstrated.
